Aleksandra Weber takes photographs of people. It starts with the view (after the approach, of course). Then it comes to the usual strange moment when photographers raise the camera like a protective shield in front of their faces and gaze from the future of the picture to the present and thus make it the past. A – again usually – brutal process. But this moment is clearly different when Aleksandra Weber realizes it. For her, the camera is not a weapon, beware a platitude! it is more a means to an end. A tool. But everything seems to be very easy at that moment. Aleksandra’s movements, the big camera, the gaze being held by those portrayed.
Aleksandra Weber is a modern flaneur, as she strolls down or up the streets of Sarajevo, Minsk and Belfast and invites her hitherto stranger to a short dance. She doesn’t steal souls, doesn’t ask for gifts – she gets both. When the pictures have become pictures and hang in large format on the wall, they look back. The people who just danced with Aleksandra are looking at us. They are really calm. Almost peaceful, almost: the gate from which the present was just handed is still slightly open. The people that Aleksandra Weber photographed are looking at us from the present. And make us aware of our own presence. It’s a charm. An almost fair magic. – Markus ÄŚolić, Bremen 2021
